The city of Dresden stands on the eastern side of Germany, within the state of Saxony, where it has become the capital. Dresden lies in the very centre of the Saxon heartland and enjoys a rather scenic valley setting.

With a population of around 500,000 inhabitants, Dresden is an expanding city and the greater Dresden area features a population of well over one million. Straddling the winding Elbe River, the city's fortunes have often been strongly linked with this prominent waterway, never more so when the Jahrhundertflut floods arrived in 2002 and caused considerable damage to the region. The Elbe River has divided much of the city into a 'V' shape, with various districts within each of these areas, including the Altstadt neighbourhood to the south and also the vibrant Neustadt area to the north.
